Started racing flat track and speedway in 1945, Bert was always referred to as a “spectacular racer and top competitor”. He became Pacific Coast half mile champion in 1948, 3rd in short track points 1949. In 1958 - 1968 became district 37 AMA Western Regional referee, He refereed for the famous Ascot Park for many years as well as many national race events. Well liked and missed by the racing community.
